Distributed teams do gift swaps too, they just do them badly: names in a spreadsheet everyone can see, gifts that arrive in January. A remote exchange needs three decisions made properly, the draw, the shipping, and the reveal.
The draw without a shared office
Paper hats do not survive remote work. An online draw does, and the crucial detail is privacy: every player opens their own private link that shows only their match. Our generator runs exactly this way, no email collection and no accounts, which matters when half the team is contractors who do not want another login.
Exclusions work remotely too. List the co-founders as an excluded pair so nobody draws their manager, and the roommate pair so the surprise survives the apartment.
Shipping rules that save the swap
Set a ship-by date, not just an exchange date. Ten days before the call is a sane default for domestic, more across borders. Two rules prevent most disasters. Everyone ships to the organizer or the giftee directly, never both. And budgets are stated with currency, because a twenty in one office is not a twenty in another.
Wishlists carry the practical load here: sizes, shipping-safe preferences, things that survive a courier. The wishlist box on each private link was built for exactly this.
The reveal that does not fall flat
Awkward silence is the default remote reveal. Two formats fix it. One person at a time holds their gift on camera and guesses who sent it, wrong guesses included. Or everyone opens at once on a countdown and the chat fills with reactions, then each giver confesses in turn.
Ten minutes, camera-on, gifts in reach before the call starts. That is the entire production.
Timezone traps
The call time that suits Berlin murders Singapore. Either schedule the reveal twice, or move the reveal to async: gifts opened on camera in a recorded message thread, confessions in the chat over a day. Slower, but nobody joins at 6 a.m.
The checklist
Draw with private links, exclusions for the pairs that matter. Ship-by date stated with the budget. Wishlist on every link. Reveal scheduled, ten minutes, gifts in reach. Draw your names and start shipping.
